1-BIOGEOGRAPHICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF THE TERRITORY



The map- territory of Castelvetrano can be found in the table in scale 1:25000 of the sheet 257 I I SO of the M.G.I. Coordinates: 37°41'32" N, 12°47'33" E. It is situated  in Sicily, in the province of Trapani, in the middle section of the Belice Valley. It extends from its outback , the Trinity lake (Lago della Trinità), to the coast at the mouth of Modione Selino river, in the south-western part of Sicily. It borders the following municipalities: Menfi, Partanna, Santa Ninfa, Campobello. From a morphological point of view, the area is quite hilly with reliefs usually higher than 100 m above sea level. The geological formation, including the territory,  is known as “Marnoso- arenacea “ of the Belice Valley (inferior and superior Pliocene) , outcropping along the canyons carved by the rivers, but the rest is covered  by Pleistocene calcareniti and calciruditi deposits.


Climate

The climatic  zone characterized by daily mild temperatures and by the consequent necessity of sunshine hours  is of C typeThe climate is characterized by mild winters and by long, warm summers. Fog is quite common, above all in summer  (because of the humidity in the area) and low rainfall is concentrated in the winter months. The temperature of January and February hardly ever goes below 5 °C while in the summer months , in June, July and August it can go above 45° C.
